Dachau Concentration Camp

1.30.2013

"Dear God, make me dumb, that I may not to Dachau come"
A popular jingle in 1935.
"Work makes you free"
Crematoria.
The gas chamber.
I had no choice but to make these photos black and white. Color does not exist in this place. It's like the Earth can't forget what it saw, and so it forever casts a shadow here. The ground still seems to cry out for the lives that this place consumed. An aching heart and tear-filled eyes does not do it justice; a life of mourning could not do it justice.

My heart will forever be stamped with what I felt that day.

I think it's so important for people to visit places like this.. to gain understanding and to really FEEL being in a place where such terrible things happened. I visited a place called S21 in Cambodia which was a school converted into basically a torture center during the khmer rouge. I still cry when I look at the pictures I took there.

Great write-up Kel. Your pictures and words really take me back and feel what we felt while we were there. Couldn't have said it better myself. You're awesome, love you!

I really hope to visit one day. My Mom went back in the late 60s and had an incredibly (and heart breaking) experience

Very haunting but very moving. What you said about it gave me a chill or two.

These photos are simply haunting. My heart breaks just looking at these. This makes me heart ache to serve the world with compassion every day. Everyone needs to experience this because there isn't enough compassion in the world today. Thank you for sharing.
